Mature standard systems have evolved across different global markets; among them, the American ASTM standards and European EN standards are the most widely applied, while standards such as ISO and JIS play significant roles in specific regions and applications. ASTM Standards:

Aluminum sheet standards established by ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) are the most widely accepted general industrial standards globally. The core standard is ASTM B209, “Standard Specification for Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Sheet and Plate.” The current version covers a full range of rolled aluminum sheets with thicknesses from 0.15 mm to 150 mm, comprehensively regulating chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, surface quality, and testing methods. The standard categorizes dimensional tolerances into “standard” and “high-precision” grades; for instance, for a 1.0 mm thick aluminum sheet, the thickness tolerance is ±0.07 mm for the standard grade and ±0.04 mm for the high-precision grade. Mechanical properties are specified according to alloy type and temper (delivery condition), with verification required via standard tensile testing for each batch. Additionally, ASTM B206 provides supplementary specifications for thick plates and die-forged plates, while ASTM B594 sets stricter ultrasonic inspection requirements for aerospace-grade aluminum. In trade practice, ASTM standards are specified by the majority of industrial projects and foreign-invested enterprises in North America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, making it the most universally applicable standard system for aluminum sheets.

European Standards (EN):

European Standards (EN) serve as mandatory market access standards within the European Union. The core standards for aluminum sheets fall under the EN 485 series: EN 485-1 defines technical delivery conditions; EN 485-2 specifies mechanical properties; and EN 485-4 outlines dimensional tolerances and shape deviations. These are complemented by EN 573-1, which establishes the chemical composition system for aluminum alloys, with corresponding alloy designations uniformly identified by the “EN AW” prefix. EN standards feature more granular classifications for surface quality and dimensional accuracy, with standard tolerance requirements that are generally stricter than ASTM “standard grade” specifications; they also mandate detailed verification for specific properties such as weldability and stress corrosion resistance. Taking common rust-proof aluminum alloys as an example, the US-standard 5052 and European-standard EN AW 5754 have similar compositions but differ in magnesium content ranges and susceptibility to weld hot cracking, meaning they cannot be treated as direct, interchangeable substitutes. Construction, automotive, and shipbuilding projects within the EU require materials to comply with EN standards and be accompanied by corresponding 3.1B material certificates.

ISO Standards:

ISO 6361 serves as a global framework for harmonizing standards across nations, outlining general technical requirements for aluminum sheets; many developing countries adopt it directly or convert it into their own national standards.

JIS Standards:

JIS H4000 (Japanese Industrial Standards) is a widely used regional standard in East Asia, with specifications for surface treatment and stamping performance that are particularly well-suited to the needs of precision manufacturing.

GB/T Standards:

China’s national standard, GB/T 3880, was formulated based on ISO and ASTM systems and serves as the baseline for domestic production, while products destined for export are adapted to meet the standards of their target markets.

Years of export experience demonstrate that the key to selecting a standard is matching requirements rather than simply aiming for the highest grade. Many purchasers assume that “high-precision” grades offer superior quality; however, processing costs for these grades are 15%–25% higher, and standard-grade precision is fully adequate for most conventional industrial applications. Furthermore, alloy designations across different standard systems do not always correspond one-to-one; blind substitution can lead to performance failures—particularly in welded structures or highly corrosive environments—making it essential to rigorously verify chemical composition and performance metrics.

ASTM focuses on general industrial applications and offers the broadest compatibility; EN emphasizes precise quality control and EU market access; and ISO focuses on global harmonization.
